  181.      QView Pro is a utility designed to allow complete control of multiple print 
  182.      queues on a Novell network.  Most of the functions provided in Novell's 
  183.      pconsole are available in QView Pro.  QView Pro also allows you to view the 
  184.      contents of more than one print queue at a time.  The following is a list of

  188.      *  Click-Drag-Drop mouse action moves print jobs between queues.

  203.      The following is a list of system requirements that you will need to run 
  204.      QView.
  205.      
  206.      *  Novell Netware.  (v2.x, v3.x or v4.x)
  207.      *  DOS 3.3 or better.
  208.      *  Novell workstation shell. (vlm, netx, etc.)
  209.      *  200k Free memory.

  215.      *  Use as few TSRs as possible.
  216.      *  The more free memory under 640k, the better.

  218.      QView was designed to run on a low end XT computer and a monochrome 
  219.      monitor.  You will receive better performance from a faster machine.   
  220.      
  221.      QView Pro requires at least 200k of memory to operate.  When using QView 
  222.      with little memory, the menus and dialogs will be slow due to overlay 
  223.      swapping.  The DOS driver SMARTDRV can help with access time; 
  224.      however, the speed can be increased by running QView with 350k of 
  225.      memory available.

  239.      
  240.      This section gives the basic steps to install the QView software on your 
  241.      server.  For specific configuration and creating a QVIEW.CFG file,  you 
  242.      should refer to other sections in this document that give more detailed 
  243.      information.

  246.      1)  Copy the following files into the SYS:PUBLIC directory on your 
  247.          server(s).

  254.      2)  Run the qvins utility.  (You must be supervisor or equivalent.)

  256.          *  Select a server that you wish to install.
  257.             This will create a QVIEW_OPERATORS user group.
  258.      
  259.          *  Select Install Queue and pick each print queue that you wish to
  260.             install.  This will give QVIEW_OPERATORS queue operator status
  261.             and directory privileges in the queue directory.
  262.      
  263.          *  Use the serial number option to enter the serial number provided on
  264.             your QView Pro distribution disk.  An evaluation copy can be installed
  265.             by leaving the serial number blank.  Evaluation copies are good for 60
  266.             days.

  268.          *  Quit qvins.
  269.      
  270.      3)  Run syscon.
  271.      
  272.          *  Select Group Information, choose QVIEW_OPERATORS.

  274.          *  Under Member List, select users that should have operator status
  275.             to the print queues.  Users who are not group members may still run
  276.             QView, however they may not be able to change the status of all
  277.             print jobs.

  279.          *  Quit Syscon

  281.      4)  Run QView.  You may now create a QVIEW.CFG configuration file if you
  282.          wish to change any of the default options.  (From the main menu, select
  283.          Save Configuration)   You should read the remainder of this document
  284.          for information on each of the features.

  299.      The display for QView has been designed to show as much information as 
  300.      possible.  The main display appears in the picture below:

  312.      IO Status:  A status indicator will blink in the upper left corner of the screen 
  313.      to show when QView is scanning the print queues.

  315.      Status Characters: The first character in the queue window shows the 
  316.      status of each print job.  Possible characters are:
  317.      
  318.        (Spinning /  )       Actively printing job.
  319.        (Expanding = )       Loading data from workstation,
  320.                             job file size increased.
  321.        L                    Loading data from workstation,
  322.                             no change  in job size.
  323.        R                    Ready and waiting to print.
  324.        W                    Waiting for target print time.
  325.        H                    User or Operator hold on job.
  326.        M                    Waiting to move to another print queue.
  327.        (Spinning triangle)  Moving job between queues.

  329.      User Information:  The remainder of the line after the status character 
  330.      shows information about the print job.  The default settings will show the 
  331.      print job banner, file size, and description.  These defaults may be changed in 
  332.      the Display Options menu.

  334.      Selected Window:  One window will always be currently selected.   The 
  335.      Selected window will have a double line border, and the remainder of the 
  336.      windows will be single lined.

  338.      Selected Print Job:  One print job in the selected window will be selected.  
  339.      This job will be highlighted.  If there are no print jobs in the selected window, 
  340.      no print job will be selected.

  474.      Moving & Copying Print Jobs
  475.      
  476.      QView includes a feature that will allow print jobs to be moved between 
  477.      print queues.   To move a print job between queues, simply click on the job, 
  478.      hold the mouse button down, drag it to another queue window, and release 
  479.      the mouse.
  480.      
  481.      You can also move a print job by selecting the job with the arrow keys and 
  482.      pressing ALT M.  You will then be presented with a list of available print 
  483.      queues.  
  484.      
  485.      When moving print jobs between queues, only the print job data is moved.  
  486.      No translation is done.  This option will only allow you to move jobs between 
  487.      queues of the same printer type.  For example, you may move a print job 
  488.      from one PostScript print queue to another, however you can not move a 
  489.      PostScript job to a HPII print queue.  
  490.      
  491.      Print jobs that are active cannot be moved.  Loading print jobs will be placed 
  492.      on hold and will be moved when loading is complete.  Jobs that are loading 
  493.      and are to be moved will be marked with a "M."
  494.

  496.      If the ALT key is held down while dragging a print job between queues, it will 
  497.      be copied instead of moved.  Print jobs may also be copied by selecting job 
  498.      and pressing ALT-C.
  499.

  501.      Spool Files work in a similar manner.  In the Queue Options dialog, you can 
  502.      specify a Service Directory.  If specified, files from this directory are placed 
  503.      in the print queue in the same manner that print jobs are moved between 
  504.      queues.  You can place a PostScript file into a print queue that is serviced by 
  505.      a PostScript printer but not one that is serviced by an HPII printer.

  563.      Screen Saver:  Use a screen saver after [2] minutes with no jobs in the 
  564.      queues.

  566.      Screen Message:  This message is displayed while the screen saver is 
  567.      running.

  569.      Auto Tile:  Automatically re-tile windows when new windows are displayed, 
  570.      windows are removed, or screen mode switch between normal and 43/50 line 
  571.      mode.

  614.      queue windows on startup.  If QView is to read from the config file, the 
  615.      window settings and placement will be preserved.  If QView is to auto seek 
  616.      all queues, the queues use the default queue settings, and the windows are 
  617.      tiled.

  619.      Close Off Line Windows:  When a queue window's status is "off line" 
  620.      QView will close the window.  For setting the criteria for "off line" see the 
  621.      section titled "Status Options."  Windows that have been closed will not 
  622.      perform automatic functions. (such as auto deleting or auto moving) 
  623.      
  624.      Re-Open Active Windows:  This option monitors windows that were 
  625.      closed because  they were "off line."  If the queue status changes such that 
  626.      they are not "off line," the window will be re-opened.  This option must be on 
  627.      at the time the window was closed.

  629.      Queue Status Change Alarm:  QView will make a chirping sound when a 
  630.      window changes status.  
  631.      
  632.      Auto Hold Jobs:  When using the edit or view commands in the Job 
  633.      Options Dialog, the print job must be on hold.  This feature allows QView to 
  634.      automatically set a hold on the job while you edit or view it.

  684.      offenses (such as duplicates) to the user or group specified to the right.

  686.      Report Off Line to:  This option will send a message when a print queue 
  687.      changes to "off line" status.  Insert the user or group in the field to the right 
  688.      of this option.

  690.      Report Warnings to:  This option will send a message when a print queue 
  691.      changes to "warning" status.  Insert the user or group in the field to the right 
  692.      of this option.

  695.      User notification:  Select the method in which the print job owner is

  729.                   least one user is notified.

  734.      Notes:       When QView attempts to use the "Client Name" field, it
  735.                   first checks to see if the connection that placed the job is
  736.                   the same user as the client name.  If so, that connection
  737.                   receives the message. If not, every user on the server
  738.                   logged in as "Client Name" will receive the message.

  740.                   When using the job moving function, the client name field is 
  741.                   changed to the login name of the workstation who moved 
  742.                   the job.  The banner name is the only indication of who sent 
  743.                   the original job before it was moved to another print queue.  
  744.                   The "Any Server / Best Guess" option will attempt to send 
  745.                   the message to the original job owner and not the user who 
  746.                   moved the job.

  796.      Use CRC check:  This option calculates a CRC for each print job.  This 
  797.      provides the best method of determining if a job is a duplicate.  Print jobs of 
  798.      the same size (such as Print Screens and MacPaint bitmaps) will be deleted 
  799.      when this option is off.  Using this option slows QView down considerably 
  800.      however.   With this option on, you may notice QView pausing for up to 20 
  801.      seconds when it is working on a print job larger than 2000k.  In the upper 
  802.      left corner of the screen, a '+' will be displayed during CRC checks if the  
  803.      option for IO Status is on.

  805.      File Size match:  This option specifies a range to match file sizes.  If set to 
  806.      0%, the two print jobs must be exactly the same size.

  808.      Job History:  QView "remembers" who printed what for a specific amount 
  809.      of time after the job arrived in the print queue.  This option specifies how 
  810.      long QView should remember print jobs.

  830.      QView allows you to edit the data associated with a print job.  This menu 
  831.      allows you to specify what text editor to use while editing a print job.  The 
  832.      default editor is EDIT.COM which comes as part of DOS 5.  If you are using 
  833.      DOS 3.3, you must change the editor program.   
  834.      
  835.      The external file editor can be any program you wish.  If you are working 
  836.      with a PostScript print queue, you may want to change the external editor 
  837.      to a PostScript preview program such as Ghost Script.  
  838.      
  839.      Some editors will create .BAK files when editing a file.  These are usually left 
  840.      in the print queue directory.  You should configure your editor to erase these 
  841.      or you will end up with dozens of .BAK files in 
  842.      SYS:SYSTEM/(QueueDirectory).

  844.      When the editor is loaded, QView removes most of itself from memory to 
  845.      give the editor space to work.  QView can swap itself to EMS, XMS or disk 
  846.      depending on what is available and the options specified in the following 
  847.      dialog.

  948.      QView can save and restore any configuration.  Select the "Save Options" 
  949.      choice from main menu to save the current configuration.  The default file 
  950.      name is QVIEW.CFG however any file name can be used.

  952.      When QView starts, it can search for a configuration file, or one may be 
  953.      specified from the command line.  If the full path and file name to a 
  954.      configuration file is given, that configuration will be used. 
  955.      
  956.      If no configuration file is specified at the command line, QView will check the 
  957.      current directory and the search path for a file with the name 
  958.      "QVIEW.CFG"  If one is found, QView will use it to load its preferences.  
  959.      
  960.      If you wish to change the position of the queue windows, or the options for 
  961.      any window, you will need to specify "Display queues from QVIEW.CFG file" 
  962.      in the queue options dialog.  If QView seeks all print queues on startup, each 
  963.      queue window will be assigned default options.

  965.      If the configuration file specifies print queues on a server that you are not 
  966.      logged into at the time you run QView, these queues will be ignored.

  968.      If you are using QView on a dedicated machine, you may wish to have a 
  969.      separate configuration file for the one workstation.  Having several copies of 
  970.      QView running which are set to delete duplicates may cause conflicts as 
  971.      more than one machine tries to delete a duplicate print job.

  973.      When loading QView, you may specify the configuration file from the 
  974.      command prompt as shown in the following example:

  1040.      Number of Jobs Moved:  A running total on each server keeps the 
  1041.      number of jobs  moved from one queue to another.  The number displayed is

  1279.      specify a log file and leave this option unselected to allow the "view log file"

  1282.      Window Name:  This entry is the name that will be displayed at the top of

  1304.      directory every 30 seconds for files.  If files are found, they are spooled 
  1305.      directly into the print queue.  The file's owner is used for the new print job 
  1306.      owner.  After the file is spooled, the file is erased.  Files that are open or in 
  1307.      use are ignored.

  1309.      This option was added for Autocad users.  Autocad has an option to allow it 
  1310.      to print to a file.  You can setup a directory on your server and give everyone 
  1311.      read/write access to it.  Configure Autocad to print to a spool file in this 
  1312.      directory.  Autocad will automatically give each print job a unique file name.  
  1313.      Next configure QView to service this directory.  This will allow Autocad to 
  1314.      print to a Novell print queue.

  1316.      For this option, enter the DOS directory name (not the Novell volume) as 
  1317.      shown in the example dialog.

  1362.      The Offline Status dialog allows you to configure what criteria are needed to 
  1363.      change the status of the print queue.  There are two "status" options that 
  1364.      QView uses.  These are "OffLine" and  "Warning."  The off line status is 
  1365.      usually used to alert QView that a printer is not printing for some reason.  
  1366.      The warning status is usually a problem that must be attended to such as a 
  1367.      print queue that is backed up with many print jobs.

  1369.      QView can send a message to a user or group whenever a queue warning or 
  1370.      offline status occurs.  (See Message Options for details).  The Queue window 
  1371.      also changes color.  Off Line queues are shown with gray letters instead of

  1420.      The options for a print job can be displayed by double clicking the mouse on 
  1421.      the print job, or selecting the job with the arrow keys and pressing enter.  
  1422.      The print job options dialog will allow you to view and change specific 
  1423.      settings of the print job.

  1429.      Service Auto-Start  If checked, the print server will service the job even if

  1431.      failure.)  This is the same as the /KEEP option in the capture command.

  1433.      Service Restart  If checked, the print job remains in the queue if a print 
  1434.      server begins servicing the job and then aborts before the job is completed.  
  1435.      If this is not checked, the job will be removed if the print server aborts the 
  1436.      job.

  1438.      Banner File Name  File name printed on the banner.  This field is used by 
  1439.      nprint.

  1441.      Header File Name  File name printed on the banner header.  This field is

  1445.      used by nprint, and when QView spools a file from a directory.

  1515.      batch files.  Below is an example of such a configuration.

  1536.      
  1537.      QView Pro also comes with a TSR loader which will allow you to bring up 
  1538.      QView in the middle of any program.  The loader can be executed by simply 
  1539.      typing  'qviewtsr' from the DOS prompt.  QViewtsr only uses 7k of standard 
  1540.      memory while loaded.  The remainder of the program is saved to a 
  1541.      temporary file on disk.  When QViewtsr is activated by pressing ALT-F10, 
  1542.      everything that was loaded after QViewtsr is removed from memory and 
  1543.      saved to a second temporary file on disk.  The QView program is executed as 
  1544.      though it had been run from the command line.  After exiting QView, 
  1545.      QViewtsr restores the system to the state it was in before activating 
  1546.      QViewtsr. 
  1547.      
  1548.      Some applications are incompatible with this method of swapping memory 
  1549.      when loading QView.  Any program that sets up its own interrupt service 
  1550.      routines will cause the machine to lock up when QViewtsr is activated. (by 
  1551.      pressing the hotkey)  NCSA Telnet and FTP will cause this to happen.  
  1552.      QViewtsr can be loaded while these programs are running, only activating it 
  1553.      by pressing the hot key will cause conflicts.
  1554.      
  1555.      QViewtsr can use the following command line arguments:

  1595.      Suggested Setups
  1596.      
  1597.      QView can be used for several computer lab or office situations.  While the 
  1598.      following list of suggested setups are common, you are not limited to the 
  1599.      examples provided in this section.
  1600.      
  1601.      Charging for printing with vending cards:
  1602.      
  1603.      Some computer networks install card readers on printers to charge for 
  1604.      printing.  This method of print charging works well if the system is not used 
  1605.      by many people.  If a print job is placed in the queue and the user does not 
  1606.      insert their print card, the job may wait in the print queue until someone 
  1607.      else inserts their card.  Expecting to receive their print, the second user will 
  1608.      be charged for the first user's print, and will not receive their own job.  In a 
  1609.      network where the print queues always have jobs pending, QView Pro can 
  1610.      be a great benefit.  
  1611.      
  1612.      To assist in this setup, one can provide a machine equipped with QView Pro 
  1613.      near the printers.  Qview can be configured to place each print job on hold as 
  1614.      it enters the print queues.  Users can then unhold their job when they have 
  1615.      their print card inserted in the printer.  This will allow everyone's print job to 
  1616.      be queued but it eliminates the confusion of who's job is ready to be printed.  
  1617.      
  1618.      QView could also be set to remove jobs that are over 15 minutes old.  This 
  1619.      would keep the print queue clear of old print jobs that users had printed and 
  1620.      forgotten about. 
  1621.      
  1622.      Charging for printing with a lab monitor:
  1623.      
  1624.      Student computer labs on a tight budget may want to charge for printing, 
  1625.      but might not want to invest in the cost of vending card readers on their 
  1626.      printers.   QView Pro can also be a useful tool in this situation.  
  1627.      
  1628.      To charge for printing, one can set up two print queues.  The first of these 
  1629.      queues could be accessible to everyone.  Using Pconsole, a supervisor can 
  1630.      set the first queue's 'queue users' list to include the group 'everyone'.  This 
  1631.      queue would not have any printers attached.  The second queue would only 
  1632.      be accessible to the QVIEW_OPERATORS user group, and only the lab 
  1633.      monitor would be a member of this group.  
  1634.      
  1635.      When a user prints, the job would be spooled to the first queue where it 
  1636.      would wait.  The user would then ask the lab monitor to print the queued job.  
  1637.      The monitor would use Qview Pro to move the print job from the first queue 
  1638.      to the second queue, and take payment from the user.

  1654.      Alleviate the question  "Where is my print job?":
  1655.      
  1656.      Many large computer networks have several printers servicing many print 
  1657.      queues.  Supervisors or lab monitors may be plagued with users asking 
  1658.      about the status of their print jobs.  Dedicating a cheap XT computer near 
  1659.      the printers can help reduce the number of questions asked.  Users can 
  1660.      check for their print jobs in several queues at once without having to be 
  1661.      instructed on the use of programs such as Pconsole.
  1662.      
  1663.      Save paper - Remove duplicates:
  1664.      
  1665.      Often, using a photo copier is faster and more economical that printing 
  1666.      many copies of a document.  QView Pro can be used to encourage users to 
  1667.      make use of photo copiers rather than printing multiple copies.  A 
  1668.      supervisor can configure QView to monitor print queues for duplicate print 
  1669.      jobs.  When a duplicate is found, QView can remove the second copy and 
  1670.      send a message to the user suggesting that they use another method of 
  1671.      making copies.  
  1672.      
  1673.      Printing Autocad plots:
  1674.      
  1675.      Autocad does not use normal BIOS functions to print to a printer or plotter.  
  1676.      Because of this the Novell network shell can not intercept the print calls 
  1677.      made by Autocad.  One recommended method of printing from Autocad 
  1678.      involves printing to a file and using nprint.exe to send the file to a print 
  1679.      queue.  QView Pro can do this automatically.
  1680.      
  1681.      The supervisor must create a special directory for Autocad print files.  Each 
  1682.      user must have full read and write access to this directory.  Autocad should 
  1683.      then be set to print to a file in this directory.  One of the options in Autocad 
  1684.      allows it to create unique file names for each print that is made.  The 
  1685.      supervisor would then set QView to service this directory.  As each print is 
  1686.      made, QView will spool the print file into the queue and set the job name to 
  1687.      the user name of the person who printed from Autocad.  One can have 
  1688.      several such directories for different users of Autocad, or allow all users to 
  1689.      share a single directory.
  1690.      
  1691.      Uninstalling QView Pro:
  1692.      
  1693.      To uninstall a demo of QView Pro from a server, use Syscon to delete the 
  1694.      QVIEW_OPERATORS user group.

  1715.      Duplicates are not removed:
  1716.      
  1717.      QView must be configured in two places in order to delete duplicate print 
  1718.      jobs.  The first option that must be set is in the Main Menu.  Press ESC to 
  1719.      display the menu and select Delete Options.  This allows the operator to 
  1720.      select what criteria will be used to detect a duplicate print job.
  1721.      
  1722.      The second option that must be set will control what QView does once a 
  1723.      duplicate has been found.  Select a queue window and press ALT-ENTER.  
  1724.      Select the Offending Jobs option.  Under the Duplicate menu choice, there 
  1725.      are several options.  You must select an action to be performed on 
  1726.      duplicates for the selected print queue.  This should be set to 'delete' if the 
  1727.      duplicate print jobs are to be removed.  This setting must be made to each 
  1728.      print queue that duplicates are to be canceled.
  1729.      
  1730.      Message not delivered to correct operator:
  1731.      
  1732.      When a message is to be sent to the QVIEW_OPERATORS user group, 
  1733.      QView starts with the server of the affected print queue, and searches for 
  1734.      any user that is a member of the group.  If one or more users are found, 
  1735.      messages will be sent to those users.  If no user is found, QView will check 
  1736.      other servers until a user is found.
  1737.      
  1738.      If your system has several servers, and you are logged into only one of those
  1739.      servers, you may or may not receive all the messages qview sends 
  1740.      depending on which queues are on your server, and if any qview operators 
  1741.      are logged into other servers.
  1742.      
  1743.      One way to correct this problem is to create a user group on only one server 
  1744.      and make qview send messages to this group.  Everyone who is to receive 
  1745.      messages should be made a member of this second group, and should be 
  1746.      attached to the one server.  This will allow all the members of the second 
  1747.      group to receive all the messages QView sends.
  1748.      
  1749.      QView locks up on startup:
  1750.      
  1751.      If QView locks up when run, there are several things that one should check 
  1752.      for.  The most common source of this problem is a corrupt QVIEW.CFG file.  
  1753.      Try running QView with the /NP option (no preferences).  If QView executes 
  1754.      ok, the configuration file is corrupt.  Remove the QVIEW.CFG file and 
  1755.      configure QView again.
  1756.      
  1757.      The second thing to check for is to see if QView has been flagged execute-
  1758.      only.  QVIEW.EXE contains overlay files.  When the application is run, 
  1759.      QView opens itself and reads menus and dialogs as needed from itself.  
  1760.      Because of the method used in reading these overlays, QVIEW.EXE must 
  1761.      never be flagged execute-only.  This may also cause a fatal error message 
  1762.      stating that QView can't read overlay file from QVIEW.EXE.

  1772.      Client names of jobs are changed by moving:

  1774.      When a print job is moved from one queue to another, QView must create a 
  1775.      new print job in the target print queue.  QView supplies all the information 
  1776.      for the new job from the original print job.  Unfortunately, the client name of 
  1777.      the print job can not be changed.  Netware uses the login of the user who 
  1778.      places the job for this field.  This causes all the jobs moved by QView to 
  1779.      assume the client name of the workstation using QView. 
  1780.      
  1781.      Limiting Access to queues:
  1782.      
  1783.      Some sites may wish to limit access to print queues.  For example,  you may 
  1784.      have an accounting print queue that only the accounting group has access 
  1785.      to, and a payroll queue that only payroll has access to.  To allow users to use 
  1786.      QView requires a few extra steps. 
  1787.      
  1788.      Install QView for each server and all print queues.  Create two new user 
  1789.      groups.  (For example we can use QV_PAY and QV_ACC).  Make users from 
  1790.      each department members of the respective group.  Next, use Pconsole to 
  1791.      make the groups 'Queue Operators' for the print queues they should have 
  1792.      access to.
  1793.      
  1794.      Last, use the QVINFO.EXE program to view a QVIEW.CFG file created 
  1795.      with the 'Show Windows From QVIEW.CFG' option set.  Note the 'Queue 
  1796.      Object ID number' listed for each print queue.  (Pconsole will also show this 
  1797.      number)  Next, use Syscon to view the directory rights assigned to the 
  1798.      QVIEW_OPERATORS user group.   Each directory listed is for a separate 
  1799.      print queue.  Part of the directory path will be the Object ID Number.  You 
  1800.      must grant the same directory to each user group for the print queues the 
  1801.      group has access to.

  1803.      For example, if the Object ID Number for the accounting print queue is 
  1804.      BD10005C, then the QV_ACC user group must have RWCEMF rights in 
  1805.      the directory SYS:SYSTEM/BD10005C.QDR directory.  (Note: this rights 
  1806.      list is for 3.11.  Rights for other versions of Netware may vary.)

  1808.      View QVIEW.CFG files with QVINFO.EXE:
  1809.      
  1810.      Options for QView are saved to the QVIEW.CFG file.  This file contains all 
  1811.      the settings for the operation of QView.  The QVINFO.EXE program can
